Can Tynedale become Bike-Friendly and support small business? Yes!

Let's ride! We can help ourselves, help our Community, help our town and its economic health, and help the planet (worth it just for that!).

Days are usually better when started by bike (and coffee). Drink enough water to stay hydrated in hot weather however, very important...see our google map of Bike-Friendly Businesses to find Tynedale spots where they'll fill up your bottle for free.

If you've never met a A Bicycle Mayor, I'm the 14th in the UK, and there are about 150 worldwide. See more about the network here. We get people into the saddle: removing barriers, encouraging, enthusing and leading.

So what am I working on?
  • Advocating for safe infrastructure: having safe cycling spaces is crucial, I'm talking to NCC and local councils.
  • Supporting skills and training: everyone needs help to learn key skills. We support Cycling with Jan when she comes to Hexham and promote her work
  • 'Everyday' cycling: commuting, shopping and the school run. We're starting a school bike bus in Hexham soon, sign up to our mailing list to find out more
  • Improving health: cycling is great for your health at any age and burns fat like nothing else. Those hills really help! 'On Yer Bike Tynedale' is a large-scale cycling event due to take place in Hexham on 22nd September, aiming to encourage all of us onto our bikes

I am honoured to be Tynedale's first Bicycle Mayor. An article was published in the Courant, published on 20 October 2023, when I started this role.

By the end of my 2 year term I would like to substantially increase the number of cyclists so that Tynedale can become less car dependent and be an even better place to live. If any individual or group has a particular cycling issue they would like to raise, please contact me on my contact page. I am also looking for sponsors to help fund events, infrastructure and to make cycle purchase more affordable.

If you cycle, would you like to know where you can lock up your bike and get a warm welcome, as well as something to eat and drink?
The Bike-Friendly Business scheme is for you. Venues that provide hospitality sign up and exhibit this window sticker. They provide safe space for locking bikes and charging for e-bike batteries (inside). They can also offer simple first aid and some bicycle repair tools, and may offer maps and information about local attractions accessible by bike. See more here
